Self Improvement Plan: Batman
Batman is a vigilante who fights crime in the streets of Gotham, consistently putting his life on the line to save others. Growing up Bruce Wayne, or Batman, had a daunting childhood experience as he fell down a well playing with Rachel, a close friend of his, and being terribly frightened by a swarm of bats. Later whilst watching a play with his parents, he sees the bats and asks to leave, little does he know they’ll face a mugger in an alley way who ends up killing both his parents right in front of him. From this Batman faces some dark enemies that he is able to over come with planning, abusing his strengths, and multiple forms of hand-to-hand combat.
Anxiety/Arousal:
Batman’s arousal and anxiety levels would change quite a fair bit throughout the night, but would be relatively high compared to a normal person. Because let’s face it… Who wouldn’t be suffering from anxiety when facing a guy in a scarecrow mask that intoxicates you with poisonous gas that makes you see your worst fear? However if we look at trait anxiety, the part of the personality, an acquired behavioral tendency, Batman would handle a lot of these situations than almost anyone as he is highly skilled, experienced, and has a strong motivator. Though if we study Batman through state anxiety stand point, an ever-changing mood component, Batman’s anxiety would change throughout the night. Though he never lets on that he is feeling anxious, when fighting Bane, you can see in his eyes that his anxiety levels have changed to just fighting Bane’s men. Despite putting himself ion many anxiety inducing situations, Batman’s arousal levels would keep him fighting. Arousal looks at both physiological and psychological activity in a person and the level of motivation in that moment. Batman’s anxiety would be at a constant state of frenzy throughout the night keeping him going late into the night.

Cooperation/Competition:

Batman displays both competition and cooperation. Competition is often studied as a social progress that occurs when rewards are given to performers who out perform their competitors. Batman competes with every enemy he faces for the chance to win the prize... The prize in the end is keeping his life. This makes him fight even harder and drives him to get back up after falling.
Though Batman is often thought to fight alone, he does often have company that he cooperates with. Cooperation looks at how a team performs and then evaluated and rewarded based on the collective group efforts. Batman's team includes and is not limited to, Robin, Commissioner Gordon, Harvey Dent, Lucius Fox, and his beloved waiter Alfred. Throughout many fights you see Batman rely on these people to send him information, set up police barriers, fight, upgrade Batman's suit and many forms of transport, and even bringing him the proper nutrients when he finally wakes from a night of crime fighting. The team is then rewarded by keeping their lives and keeping Gotham at peace. However on a more grand complex, Batman is also apart and the leader of the Justice League, a team that fight crime all around the world keeping the world at peace and often saving the human race. Batman cooperates a lot more than what most people think and therefor often has success. |
Feedback/Reinforcement:
Reinforcement is the use of rewards or punishments to increase or decrease the likelihood of that event happening. It can be very simple for Batman. In a fight if he makes a wrong move or isn't balanced he is likely to be struck and injured, therefor resulting in him trying not to do that again. When Batman makes a strong move and uses darkness to his advantage he is more than likely rewarded by knocking the enemy out resulting in him trying to perform that task again. This is shown in fighting with Bane, Batman tries to use darkness, this is worked multiple times for him before so he tries to repeat it, however Bane was born and raised in the dark so Batman is punished for his mistake and has his back broken. Once Batman recovers he changes tactics and is rewarded by defeating Bane and saving Gotham.
Feedbacks main purpose is to motivate and to instruct someone. Outside crime fighting Lucius Fox and Alfred give Batman the most feedback, however not all of it is positive. A lot of it is instructional which provides information about his specific behaviors that should be performed. This is key to Batman's success and is put to use in planning missions for over throwing drug cartels and shipments. Another form of feedback Batman receives is in his fights, like mentioned earlier, if he misses his chance to strike he gets feedback in the form of a punch. This would be both constructive and motivational feedback as like most, would be motivated to not be hit, shot, or broken again. |

Improving Weaknesses
Batman doesn't have many weaknesses. His major weakness is also one of his greatest strengths in that he is only human. Though he is restricted to only a body's limits, he is able to compensate for his weakness with his suit. Superman on the other hand is an alien and can forget that he can be defeated causing him to become reckless. In the many battles Superman and Batman have this is often why Batman wins. However being human, he can make mistakes and take damage that could kill a human. Batman's bat suit is his way of conquering being only human. My suggestion for him to improve this weakness is more bullet proof padding and more mobility, as we see in The Dark Knight. Batman already combats his weaknesses well by thorough planning before an attack. In order to overcome his weaknesses he must put himself in situations where he has the upper hand. Training himself in all forms of martial arts and adapting to the darknesses puts him above most enemies. Distance is another weakness Batman has. Fighting close hand to hand is his preferred method. Facing an enemy in distance needs some thought put into it. Like most weaknesses Batman has already made a plan to outsmart his opponent. Using his many gadgets and distractions in his utility belt, he can distract and get close to an enemy before the enemy knows he's there. Again, it is hard to come up with a plan for improvement for Batman as his life depends on him doing it himself.
Utilizing Strengths
Again difficult to create a plan for something Batman already does almost perfectly. Batman's power lies in his ability to recognise and use his personal strengths. Creating a plan of attack is how he does and should utilize his strengths, as seen in any comic, tv show, and movie he has been in. He is effectively able to be in combat, sneak past anyone (including superman) and escape without being caught. He utilizes his strengths again by playing on the enemies fear, hence why he dresses dark and like a bat. The enemy never knows where they are so the enemy is always terrified, which wouldn't be possible without WayneTech. Thanks to his wealth and resources he can create any fighting aid he needs again helping him utilize his strengths even more. Combining all these and utilizing them is what Batman is best at and what in my books makes him the greatest superhero/vigilante to be created.
